Young hunters tag nearly 3000 deer during late youth portion of season

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows young deer hunters ages 6 through 15 checked 2,944 deer during Missouri’s late youth portion of this year’s deer hunting season.

Of the nearly three thousand deer harvested this past weekend: 1,149 were antlered bucks, 426 were button bucks, and 1,369 were does.

The two different youth portions accounted for 14,135 killed statewide. Web site totals show the youth only hunts resulted in 159 deer taken in Harrison county, 149 in Linn county,  115 for Sullivan county, 114 for Mercer county and 107 for Daviess.

Youth hunt numbers for other area counties are less than 100 including Putnam at 90, Livingston with 80, Grundy 76 and Caldwell county at 57.

Leading the statewide totals are Osage at 308 and Howell with 302 deer taken during the youth only portions.

Deer hunting in Missouri continues with archery deer hunting through Jan. 15, firearms antlerless portion is this weekend (Dec. 2-4), Firearms alternative methods portion runs Dec. 24th through Jan. 3.
