An autopsy was to be conducted today on the body of a woman found dead yesterday in a motel room at Lakeview Restaurant and Motor Lodge in Trenton.

Coroner Dwayne Slater said the autopsy was handled by a company in Kansas City, Kansas, with preliminary results known in the near future. Toxicology tests also are to be done with those results known, Slater said, in about two months.

Police Chief Tommy Wright said the case is being handled as an unattended death but he would not offer any other comments pertaining to the law enforcement investigation.

Wright confirmed a representative of the state fire marshal’s office was called in to assist with the investigation due to a death being involved and smoke damage that was found inside the motel room. The Trenton Fire Department had responded to the scene along with police officers after 11:30 yesterday.

Police Chief Wright noted there was visual evidence of fire in the room.

The identity of the 40-year-old woman was being withheld by authorities until there’s confirmation that next of kin have been notified. We have been told she is an “out of our area” resident who was described as temporarily staying at the motel.
