Trenton R-9 Board of Education meets with lengthy agenda

The Trenton R-9 Board of Education approved the proposed substitute compensation plan for next school year at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Non-certified substitutes will start on the first step of the non-certified salary schedule, which is the equivalent of $10.25 per hour or $76.88 per day for ten or fewer consecutive days.

Substitute teachers and nurses will earn 40 cents per hour more than the first step of the non-certified salary schedule, the equivalent of $10.65 per hour or $79.88 per day for ten or fewer consecutive days.

Certified substitutes will earn an additional $2 per day for 11 to 24 consecutive days. Substitutes will receive the daily rate of the base salary for 25 or more consecutive days.

The board approved a request for proposals for health insurance broker services and health insurance policies. The proposals will be brought to the meeting in May, and services will begin July 1.

An agreement with the Network for Educator Effectiveness was approved to provide the platform for certified evaluations during the next school year. The cost of the evaluation tool for next year will be the same as it is this school year at $5,500.

The board approved two GEC Community Foundation grants.

Fifth-grade teacher Kim Foster’s application requests $351.84 to purchase 24 sets of headphones for the Trenton Middle School computer lab.

Librarian E’lisha Gass’s application requests $1,000 to purchase eight Breakout EDU kits to be checked out of the Trenton Middle School and High School Library. The kits will come with items to help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills for those who use them.

The board approved the implementation of the Bright Futures framework for next school year. The program will promote, facilitate, and enhance parent, student, and community involvement, which goes along with the district’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.

Three components make up Bright Futures: meeting any child’s basic needs, building community capacity, and providing service learning.

The Community Action Partnership of North Central Missouri will pay the one-time $3,000 fee to get Trenton R-9 started with the program.

The board approved the use of district funds to pay for the logo on Trenton’s water tower.

The district will receive $5,317 from the MC Power as payment in lieu of taxes income, which was not included in the budget. The district will use the funds to pay for its logo to be painted on the water tower as long as the cost is $5,000 or less.

The board approved the continued use of the Missouri School Boards’ Association at a cost of $6,200 as well as the list of policy updates provided by the association. The dues are calculated on the district’s expenditures as reported by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The membership will run from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018.

Bonita Price from Citizens Bank and Trust presented the check for the fourth quarter Bulldog Debit Card program to the board for $2,421.15.

Three incoming board members were sworn in: Doug Franklin, Brandon Gibler, and Corey Leeper.

Franklin was elected as President, Brandon Gibler as Vice President, Martha Roberts as Treasurer, and Susan Leeper as Secretary. Franklin and Gibler were elected as Missouri School Boards’ Association delegates.

Superintendent Dan Wiebers presented a certificate of appreciation to outgoing board president Kevin Bailey for his dedicated service to the district. Bailey said he took pride in three things during his 12 years of affiliation with the board: the kids, the staff and administration, and the community.

Wiebers presented a rough draft of the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan to the board. The plan can be viewed by the community on the school district’s website, and the plan will be approved by the board at the next meeting.

Students from Alicyn Studyvin’s Dual Credit Speech Class presented information on a security enhancement involving students and staff swiping identification cards while entering and exiting Trenton Middle School and High School.

Trenton High School and Middle School Assistant Principal Kasey Bailey reported on the At-Risk Program.

Just over eleven hundred students are enrolled in the program which implements in-school suspension, the parent portal, the Academic Lab, the Success Center, the Trenton High School Study Lab, and Bulldog Bridge.

The district will host the Missouri School Boards’ Association Spring Regional Meeting at Trenton High School the evening of April 26 at 6 o’clock. Reservations have been made for all board of education members.

Rissler Elementary School Principal Jennie Boon reported that money was raised to install two water bottle fillers at the school.

Trenton Middle School Principal Daniel Gott introduced the Students of the Month for April for the character trait of a sense of humor.

Trenton High School students were recognized for their award-winning art, even though neither one could attend the school board meeting.

Rylee Berti received first place in photography at the Regional High School Exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and Harli Michael won the statewide MoDOT Save MO Lives Teen Seat Belt Poster Contest.

In results from a closed session of the board, resignations were accepted and new hires were approved.

Hires: Abigail Shipley (8th grade L.A. teacher), The following all for elementary positions with grades to be determined, Shelby Bagley, Hannah Haffecke, Lisa Wallace, and Taylor Beaverson.
