A traffic accident in Trenton has claimed the life of a 20-year old Unionville resident, Austin VanHoutan.  Authorities were notified this (Friday) morning, at approximately 10:30, of a pickup truck on its side in Muddy Creek, at the 28th Street Bridge.

VanHoutan was pronounced dead at the scene by Grundy County Coroner Duane Slater.  It was not immediately determined when the accident occurred, although Slater said it was to be well before authorities were notified.  The location is described as not easily seen by vehicular traffic on 28th Street, as a person, on foot, would need to “be almost on the bridge to see it”.

The Highway Patrol said the eastbound pickup truck traveled off the right side of 28th Street, went down an embankment, became airborne, and as the front of the truck hit the creek bed, the vehicle itself came to rest on the driver’s side, in shallow water.

The pickup truck was demolished.  The Patrol said VanHoutan was not wearing a seat belt.

The Trenton Fire Department, the Grundy County Rural Fire Department, Trenton Police Department, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, and the Grundy County Ambulance Service all responded to the scene.

Twenty-year old Austin VanHoutan of Unionville is the first traffic fatality of 2016 in Grundy County investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
