FAIRBANKS, Alaska (UPI) — A suspect who shot a police officer and stole his patrol car early Sunday morning in Alaska remains at large, according to police.
A Fairbanks police officer was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds after an encounter with a pedestrian who stole the officer’s cruiser after shooting him, leaving the car a few blocks away.
Dashboard video shared by the Fairbanks Police Department shows Sgt. Allen Brandt’s car pulling up next to the man, who appears in a heavy coat and a hat. The man then crosses in front of the car with what appears to be a gun.
The car then starts moving again, before pulling into a parking lot and stopping. The man can then be seen walking away from the car in the video.
Brandt had been responding to a report of shots fired when he came up on the pedestrian who allegedly shot him. Brandt, an 11-year veteran of the police department, was taken to nearby Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment of what the department reporters were serious injuries and then flown to Anchorage for further treatment.
