POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) — A preliminary hearing will be Oct. 6 for a southeast Missouri man accused of killing a 79-year-old woman with a baseball bat.
The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic (http://bit.ly/1COCxBR ) reports that 39-year-old Eric Keith Wyatt of Poplar Bluff was arraigned Friday on a charge of first-degree murder. He is jailed without bond after pleading not guilty.
Marion Carter of Poplar Bluff was beaten to death on Wednesday. She was found dead in a recliner at the home where she lived with an 11-year-old grandson.
Police believe a dispute over money prompted the killing. They say the bat used in the crime was thrown into the Black River but recovered.
