Missouri will soon have a new motor vehicle license plate celebrating the state’s bicentennial in 2021.

The new plate will replace the current bluebird license plate and be available January 1st, 2019.

The new plate will honor the state flag with bands of red, white, and blue.

Waves in the bands represent the state’s rivers and acknowledge their importance in the state’s role as a gateway for American exploration and transportation.

The new design was decided on by public vote after the Bicentennial License Plate Advisory Committee held public hearings to receive input on the design.

The State Historical Society of Missouri’s Bicentennial Committee also played a role in the development of the new plate.

Legislation approved by the General Assembly last year established the advisory committee for the Department of Revenue to develop and approve a new license plate in honor of Missouri’s bicentennial.
