The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free prescribed burn workshop at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, at the Pony Express Conservation Area northwest of Cameron. Prescribed fire is an effective way to manage vegetation for better cattle forage and improved wildlife habitat.

The workshop will cover topics such as fire history, prescribed fire benefits, timing fires to achieve desired results, fire behavior and how to plan a prescribed burn. MDC experts will discuss equipment, safety and how to organize burn teams or cooperatives for a neighborhood. They can also offer assistance in developing a burn plan.

A demonstration burn at the Conservation Area will follow lunch if weather conditions permit. Property managers wishing to assist with the burn should wear leather boots and bring leather gloves. All classroom materials, refreshments and a lunch will be provided by MDC.

Pre-registration is requested by March 16. For more information or to register, contact Nate Mechlin, MDC private land conservationist, at 660-663-3703, ext. 133, [email protected].
