The Trenton Bulldogs are 3-0, after a workmanlike effort earned them a 19-0 shutout victory at Putnam County High School on Friday night.

Trenton opened the scoring on the game's second play from scrimmage, with sophomore back Colton Neff going the distance. Tom Johnson provided the play-by-play call on Hot Country Z 101.7:

The extra point kick was blocked, leaving the score at 6-0. The Bulldogs hit the end zone again with 3:50 to go in the first quarter, with Chanse Houghton going in on an 8 yard run. The play was nearly disastrous for Trenton, with the pitch to Houghton thrown wide of the senior back. However, he was able to pick up the ball at the Midget 10 and outrace the Unionville defenders to the end zone. A two-point conversion pass attempt to junior Bailey Owen missed the target, and the score was 12-0.

Putnam County, behind good line play and the running of quarterback Jacob Parker, threatened to cut into the Bulldogs lead in the second quarter, but a drive to the Trenton 5 yard line stalled, and the lead at the break remained 12 points.

While not fancy, the Bulldogs offensive attack in the second half proved effective in keeping Putnam County's offense off the field, with Trenton scoring the final points of the game on a 4 yard touchdown run by sophomore Travis Leeper with 1:43 to go in the third quarter. This time, the extra point kick by Jonathan Lamp was good, for the final point of the evening.

Trenton Head Coach Wes Croy, on the Coke/TNT Locker Room Show on Friday night, said the stern challenge the Midgets provided his team will pay off in the long run:

Trenton, 3-0 for the first time since 2007, was led by 15 carries and 115 yards rushing from Neff, and 15 carries and 93 yards from Leeper. Trenton now prepares for a "Battle of the Unbeatens" for Homecoming this Friday night (September 20th) at 7 o'clock against the Lafayette County Huskers at C.F. Russell Stadium. Putnam County, led by 21 carries for 105 yards from Parker, falls to 1-2. The Midgets take on state-ranked Marceline this week.
