Drought Intensifies Across North Missouri

A long stretch of hot and dry weather during the past few weeks has allowed drought conditions to intensify across much of northern Missouri.

Severe drought (D2) has expanded in areas that have received little to no rain during the month of august and first week of September. In fact, some locations experienced their driest month of august on record.

Much of northern Missouri, mainly north of the Missouri river, are in a moderate drought (D1) or severe drought (D2). The worst drought conditions are across the northern several tiers of counties in Missouri. Areas south and east of the moderate drought are not currently experiencing drought conditions or are just abnormally dry.


Abnormally Dry (D0) - Portions of west central, central and northwestern Missouri as well as parts of east central Kansas:

In Missouri: A part of or all of Atchison, Holt, Nodaway, Andrew, Buchanan, Platte, Clinton, Clay, Jackson, Cass, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, Saline, and Cooper.

In Kansas: A part of or all of Doniphan, Atchison, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, and Johnson.


Moderate Drought (D1) - Portions of northern Missouri north of the Missouri river.

In Missouri: A part of or all of Atchison, Nodaway, Andrew, Worth, Harrison, Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler, Macon, Chariton, Howard, Cooper, Saline, Carroll, Ray, Lafayette, Jackson, Clay, Buchanan, DeKalb, Clinton, Daviess, Caldwell, and Livingston.

Severe Drought (D2) - Portions of northern Missouri.

In Missouri: A part of or all of Nodaway, Worth, Gentry, Harrison, Mercer, Putnam, Sullivan, Adair, Schuyler, Macon, Linn, Daviess, Grundy, Chariton, DeKalb, Caldwell, Livingston.
