|According to the KMBC Website A bus driver and 22 sixth-grade girls are expected to recover after the school bus they were in went off a ramp from Kansas Highway 7 to Highway 32 and wound up on its side.|
The bus was carrying students from The Pembroke Hill School on the way to a campout.
Witnesses said the bus was one of two from the school making the trip to the Tall Oaks Conference Center near Linwood, Kan. The second bus, which carried boys, was not involved in the wreck.
Stephen Butler said his son was in the second bus. He said it was unnerving to see helicopters over the scene when he went to pick his son up, even though he knew his child was fine.
"We went past the accident on the way in," Butler said. "I'm glad I got the word before I got the view because it's grisly."
Initial accounts from the scene used similar words to describe the crash. Medical teams performed triage in the grass near the toppled bus, sending children and the driver to four different hospitals. Police said there were no indications that any of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
The crash started a chaotic day for staff members at Pembroke Hill, as many rushed to check on students.
"We can't say enough about the first responders who were out there and managed the scene so professionally and smoothly and kept everybody as calm as possible," said Beth Bryant of Pembroke Hill.
A tow truck pulled the bus back on its wheels a few hours after the crash and pulled it away from the scene.
