The highway patrol described injuries as serious for 75 year old Clarence Smith of Melcher, Iowa. He was taken by ambulance to the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa.

The state patrol said Smith was southbound on Atlantic Avenue, approached a curve to the right but his sports utility vehicle traveled off the left side of the road.

The vehicle went through some shrubs and struck a tree. The S-U-V was demolished in Friday's accident at Lake Marie, two miles southwest of Mercer. The driver was using a seat belt.
