|Hundreds of people gathered near the future home of the North Missouri Center for Youth and Families for the organization's first-ever fund-raising Light the Night 5K and Glow Block Party.|
With over 400 registered runners, including 71 in the final few hours before the event started, the 1st annual "Light The Night" 5K & block party benefit for NMCYF was a huge success. For a few hours, the corner of Locust and 2nd street was transformed into a glowing dance party afterward, as an estimated 550 people were in attendance.
One of our goals for this event was to not just have a race, then people go home. We really wanted them to hang around and have some fun afterward, and I think we accomplished that. In order to bring in the numbers we were hoping for, it had to be unique, which is where the "GLOW" idea came from. All along, we aimed for a unique, family-friendly event..so we hope the participants felt they were provided that.
Race Day Timing Solutions provided the chip timing system at the end of the race, making it easy for runners to get an fairly accurate time. Those times are currently available at resultskc.com.
We were pleased with every aspect of the race, and have had tremendous feed-back regarding the route itself, and the event as a whole. Obviously, we are looking at improvements as well..one of them being having the same location for the start as the finish. Doing this would allow the runner's time to start as soon as they cross the start line, as opposed to relying on the shot-gun start. Other improvements for next year will include more water stations along the route, and more options for kids at the after-party.
Residents along the route were invited to come out and cheer on the runners and they did in full force. Many of the runners commented on how fun it was to see them cheering from the yards, as well as the groups at each corner helping with turns and encouragement.
There are so many people to thank who made this happen. I especially want to thank Natalie Bone and the Light The Night committee, our corporate sponsors, the volunteers who just showed up and were willing to do anything, our vendors, and the Chillicothe Street Dept. and Chillicothe Police Dept.
