Flag Day will be observed on Friday. According to state representative Mike Lair of Chillicothe, the Continental Congress officially adopted our national symbol June 14th of 1777. Flag Day was formalized first in 1916 by President Wilson and then in 1949 by President Harry Truman. The National Flag Day Foundation joins forces with organizations such as the Scouts, 4-H, VFW, and the American Legion to promote one of this country’s most honored symbols.
In the five years he has served as a state representative, Mike Lair said he has worked with the Chillicothe American Legion Post to distribute flags. Lair often has flags with him when he travels around the 7th legislative district. When he sees a tattered or faded flag, Lair then offers to replace it.
Over 200 flags have been distributed by Lair. He vowed to do this in honor of his father who served in the Marine Corps and fought during World War II in the Pacific Theater of operations. If constituents are in need of a U-S flag, call the office of State Representative Mike Lair. He also has a few state flags as well.
The 7th house district includes Grundy, Livingston, and most of Linn counties.
