KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A van carrying 10 people slammed into the back of a tractor trailer in northwest Missouri Thursday morning in a multi-car collision that killed two and injured nine others.
Authorities said it happened about 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 at mile marker 39, about four miles south of 229 Highway in St. Joseph. The crash stopped traffic for four hours while investigators cleared the scene.

SkyTracker video from over the scene showed a white van with significant front-end damage underneath the back end of a truck.

According to officials, the van was shuttling employees to Triumph Foods in St. Joseph.

It appears the van was privately-owned, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The two killed were the driver and his wife, 42-year-old Phun Bik and 36-year-old Rose Mery Thlia.

The other eight people in the van were transported to an area hospital.

One of those passengers suffered critical injuries, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

A ninth person injured was in a passenger vehicle also hit in the crash.

Traffic was already backed up because of a previous crash Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said. In all, four vehicles were involved in the crash.

Traffic was re-routed in the small town of Faucett, Mo., just south of the crash site. Not long after the backup between the accident site and the Faucett exit was more than a mile long and contained hundreds of vehicles.
