Chillicothe wrestlers spoil Trenton's Senior Night, 48-24

The Chillicothe Hornet wrestlers won five matches to Trenton's four in 'on-the-mat' competition on Tuesday night at Trenton High School. However, Chililcothe won four other weight classes by forfeit while giving up just one forfeit to the Bulldogs. The end result was Chillicothe winning the dual, 48-24.
The dual started at 138 pounds where Chillicothe's Matt Shaffer won by pin. Teammate Wagner Chapman followed with a 3-1 win in overtime. Trenton then captured FOUR straight matches, with Mason Mounce taking a 19-2 technical fall, Trey Shields winning 11-0 major decision, Alex Lovell victorious 6-2, and Jacob Spillman winning by pin. At that point, THS led 18-9.

Trenton's lead would quickly disappear, with Chillicothe's Luke Plummer and Vinson Moore winning by forfeit, Chance Holcer getting a pin, and Matt Scobbe receiving a forfeit victory. Then came two more forfeit victories by Trenton's Carlos Gonzalez and Chillicothe's Kyler Sewell.

Chillicothe won the final TWO weight classes of the night, with Thaddeus Rinehart claiming a 4-2 decision and Aaron Baker winning by pin. Chillicothe captured two of the three JV matches (Zach Dayley and _____ Saville) by pin. Trenton's Layton Harkins won 6-1 in double overtime.

Jacob Spillman is now 27-0 this season while Carlos Gonzalez is 24-0. Wrestlers Caleb Feagins, Carlos Gonzalez, Alex Lovell, and Jacob Spillman, along with Managers Rahel Horner and Ebony Meighen, were the seniors recognized prior to Tuesday night's dual.

The Trenton wrestlers will have a quadrangular on the road Thursday night at 6 o'clock, taking on Stanberry, Rock Port, and Hamilton. On Saturday, the Bulldogs compete in the Quad State Tournament (Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas) in Maryville at 10 o'clock. Trenton will be at Higginsville on Thursday, January 31st at 6 o'clock, and compete on Saturday, February 2nd in the Lexington Tournament, starting at 9 o'clock in the morning.

Last Saturday, Trenton had two first and a second in the A Pool of the Brookfield Wrestling Tournament. Trenton also had a pair of firsts in the B Pool.

Placing first in the A Pool were Carlos Gonzalez with a 4-0 record at 113 pounds and Jacob Spillman with a 2-0 mark at 170 pounds. Trenton's Mason Mounce was second in the A Pool with a 4-1 record at 152 pounds.

Trenton's first place finishers in the B Pool were Terrin Ellis at heavyweight and Wynne DeVorss at 126 pounds. Ellis went undefeated in four matches while DeVorss won all three of his encounters.

In notable matches, Carlos Gonzalez (at 113) defeated Jake Gipson of Plattsburg 11-6. MissouriWrestling.com ranks Gonzalez #1 in the state at 106 pounds and Gipson #2 in Class 1 at 113 pounds. Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon anticipates Gonzalez wrestling at 113 pounds for postseason.

Among the two matches for Trenton's Jacob Spillman was a victory over J.J. Obongo of Brookfield 11-4. Spillman is ranked #2 and Obongo #6 at 170 pounds.
