Trenton Bulldogs pass quarterfinal tests at Hamilton Basketball Tournament

The Trenton girls and boys basketball teams were challenged by squads from Bethany and Lathrop on Tuesday night, but strong fourth quarter surges by the Bulldogs sent both THS teams into Thursday night's semifinal round, with quarterfinal wins in the Hamilton Basketball Tournament.
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, playing South Harrison for the third time this season, squeezed by the Bethany girls by the score of 49-42. South Harrison, looking to pull a monumental upset, was within 43-42 of the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs with 32 seconds remaining, but THS knocked in six straight free throws to ice the game. Trenton entered the contest as the #2 ranked team in Class 3, in the just released MBCA/MoSports state poll.

Scotlin Hurley led Trenton with 13 points, while Makaila Capeder had 10 for the now 15-1 THS girls. South Harrison's improvement in their third shot at Trenton came, in large part, to the play of two freshman. In particular, Hunter Purdun had a huge second quarter for South Harrison, scoring 12 of her game-high 14 points in that frame. Ciara Jennings, a 6'2" freshman center, had nine points, and was a large defensive presence that gave Trenton difficulties with their normally potent inside game. Kaylee Smith finished with 10 points for South Harrison.

Trenton will play the Polo Lady Panthers in a 7:30 semifinal game on Thursday night. Polo advanced with a 58-49 overtime win on Monday night against Gallatin. In girl's pool play, Hamilton and Lathrop have moved into a 'semifinal' showdown on Thursday afternoon at 4:30, with Lathrop drilling Richmond on Tuesday night, 58-19, and Hamilton cruising on Monday night, to a 63-25 win over the Lady Spartans. The losses push Richmond into the consolation final on Friday night, where they will play Gallatin, a consolation semifinal winner (57-25) on Wednesday night against South Harrison.

The Trenton boys trailed upset-minded Lathrop in the battle of the 4/5 seeds on Tuesday night, 33-32 going into the fourth quarter. However, Trenton showed a good finishing kick, scoring 29 points in the fourth quarter and rallying for a 61-56 win over the Mules. The win broke a two-game losing streak (South Harrison and Chillicothe) for the Bulldogs, and pushed their season record to 11-6.

Chase Tolson led Trenton with 19 points in the quarterfinal win, with Chris Kurtz adding 12. For the Mules, Chris Koehn had 13 points, Brandon Stimelsky 12, and Robert Askren 11.

Trenton will next play Richmond (the #1 seed) on Thursday night in a 9 o'clock semifinal. Richmond rattled the host Penney Hornets in a Monday night quarterfinal, 69-38, behind 34 points from Reid Summers. In Monday's other boys game (in pool play), Gallatin ripped Polo, 84-40. On Tuesday night, South Harrison defeated Polo, 80-49, pushing the Panthers into Friday night's consolation final with Lathrop, a 60-57 consolation winner on Wednesday night over Hamilton.

South Harrison and Gallatin, two powerhouses from the Grand River Conference this season, will meet in the semifinals at 6 o'clock on Thursday night. Gallatin is the #2 seed, with South Harrison sitting at #3.

Tuesday night's Trenton games were broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com, and could be viewed on 'Internet TV'. We will have the exact SAME set-up for Thursday night's games involving Trenton (girls vs. Polo at 7:30, boys vs. Richmond at 9:00), with Tom Johnson on the call from Penney High School!
