Winter storm expected to hammer Iowa, northern Missouri

|A winter storm warning has been issued for 6 o'clock tonight (Wednesday night) until 12 noon on Thursday, for the threat and likelihood of snow and blowing snow across the NORTHERN portions of our listening area. This warning affects these counties: WORTH, GENTRY, HARRISON, MERCER, DEKALB, DAVIESS, AND GRUNDY]. This area is specifically, north of a line from St. Joseph to Kirksville.|
This storm system will have the ability to produce light to moderate snowfall accumulations over much of northern Missouri, with potential accumulations of 4 to 7 inches in areas north of Highway 36. This snowfall will combine with strong northwest winds sustained between 25 and 35 mph and gusting as high as 45 mph, to create the potential for near-blizzard conditions from Wednesday night into Thursday morning across the warning area. All interested parties are encouraged to monitor the latest forecast information.
Light rain is expected to develop as early as Wednesday afternoon near the Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska borders. This rain will begin to mix with snow and sleet on Wednesday evening, quickly transitioning to all snow by late Wednesday evening. Snow will diminish by daybreak to Thursday.
Total accumulations between 4 to 7 inches will be possible, with the highest amounts near the Iowa border.
Snow is expected to make travel hazardous on Interstate 35 as well as Highway 36 on Wednesday night into Thursday. Those traveling during this time should begin to consider alternative plans.
Strong northwest winds between 25 to 35 mph, and gusting to 45 mph, are expected to develop with this storm. These winds, when combined with light to moderate snow, are expected to lead to near blizzard-like conditions through Thursday morning.
A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
