
Mercer girls and boys repeat as HDC Conference Tournament champions

| The North Mercer Lady Cardinals rolled past Winston while the North Mercer boys held off an unbeaten Ridgeway squad, with each Cardinal team winning on their home floor on Friday night, to claim the 2012 HDC Conference Basketball Tournament championships. North Mercer's girls remained unbeaten with a 81-33 win over Winston, as Sierra Michaelis scored 34 points and Courtney Owens 27 for Mercer. No Lady Redbirds were in double figures.
The Pattonsburg Lady Panthers won third place over Gilman City, 38-32.
In the boys championship game, Mercer beat the Ridgeway Owls, 57-47, as senior forward Colton Hartley led the Cardinals with 25 points while Caleb Wyatt and Garrett Noe both scored 12. Ridgeway, in falling to 5-1 on the season, had four boys in double figures, with Matthew Craig and Ben Rinehart both scoring 11 points, and Joe Longo and Dakota Hale both at 10.
The North Harrison boys held off a fourth-quarter surge from Winston to win the third-place game 49-46. Garren Gibson led the Shamrocks with 16 points, with Reed Hallock 11, and Luke Stanley 10. For Winston, Chevy Calhoon had 16 points.
The 2012 HDC Conference Tournament was played at North Mercer High School's gymnasium.
