The Penney High School Hornets scored four touchdowns in less than six minutes of fourth quarter action, blowing open a tight game in St. Louis, as Hamilton won the Class 1 state championship game on Friday afternoon over the Valle Catholic Warriors by a score of 60-34. Hamilton's win gives the school its third state title in four years, with the Hornets having won the Class 1 state title in 2009, and the Class 2 crown in 2010.
The Hornets stumbled early against Valle Catholic, falling behind 14-0 after one quarter. Running back Derrick Hughes got Penney on the board midway through the second quarter, with the Matt LaPiana extra point making it 14-7. A 30 yard touchdown run by Warrior standout Tyler Fallert made it 21-7 with 5 1/2 minutes to go in the half, but Hamilton cut that lead in half, with a Kellen Overstreet 15 yard run with 1:15 remaining making the score 21-14 at the break.

The scoring fest continued into the third quarter, but this time, the Hornets got the jump, tying the game at 21 with 7:56 to go in the third on a 13 yard scoring run by Devan Hughes, and a LaPiana extra point. The Hornets took their first lead two minutes later on a 68 yard Kellen Overstreet run, but a missed PAT left the score 27-21. Valle Catholic took the lead back less than two minutes later on a 40 yard scoring pass, with the PAT making it 28-27 Warriors. Hamilton added six more points, and claimed a 33-28 lead, on an Overstreet 53 yard touchdown pass, but the two-point conversion failed. Valle took a 34-33 lead after three quarters, courtesy of a 52 yard Fallert run. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Warriors kept the one-point advantage until 7:08 remained, as Derrick Hughes 5 yard run made the score 39-34. The Hornets had a devastating finishing blow to Valle Catholic's championship hopes late, putting the game on ice with three touchdowns scored within 38 seconds. Overstreet had a 76 yard scoring catch, Derrick Hughes an 62 yard run, and Keithan Litton a 44 yard interception return.
