|The Milan Lady Wildcats, on the strength of a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, ended the home portion of their schedule with a 6-2 victory over Putnam County on Thursday night at Legion Field.|
After the Lady Midgets tied the game at 2 with a fifth-inning run, Milan exploded for four to take the lead, with Kyley Doak cracking an RBI single, followed by a two-run base knock by Kaylea Thompson, and an RBI single by Bianca Caponetto, who finished two for three with a pair of RBI's.
Doak finished the night 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Kailyn Watts added an RBI. Alyssa Forster picked up the win with seven innings of six hit, two run softball. Only one of the runs scored against the right-hander were earned. The win evens Milan's record at 11-11 on the season, and is an important one for post-season confidence, as Milan's district tournament will be hosted by Putnam County next week.
The Lady 'Cats have the number seven seed in the tournament and will play number two seed Brookfield next Wednesday in a first-round game. Penney High School earned the number one seed. Milan finishes the REGULAR season next Monday, at Brookfield at 5 o'clock.
The win over Putnam County finishes five days and nights of softball for the Lady Wildcats that, while solid, brought its share of "up's and down's".
On Saturday, Milan finished fourth in the Schuyler County Tournament, beating LaPlata in the quarterfinals 7-4, before being bested by Knox County 9-5 in the semifinals and Scotland County 5-3 in the third place game. Head Coach Nathan Dodson noted a handful of controversial calls that did not go Milan's way in the loss to Scotland County.
On Monday, Milan lost in heart-breaking fashion at Schuyler County, 4-3 in nine innings, as a two-strike, two-out, two run home run by the Lady Rams tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Schuyler went on to win the game in the ninth on a solo blast.
On Tuesday night, Milan downed a stout Linn County squad by a score of 3-2, in a game that went eight innings. Kyley Doak pitched the complete game victory for Milan, as Alyssa Forster was given the night off to rest her arm. Milan won that game on a successful squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 8th inning, with Hannah Sanders scoring Kailyn Watts.
