|An Omaha, Nebraska resident was fatally injured and four other persons received minor injuries in an Interstate 29 traffic accident yesterday near St. Joseph. |
The crash also involved a Trenton man whom, the highway patrol, said wasn't hurt.
The accident yesterday morning was three miles south of Faucett. Cars driven by 53 year old Clifton Sorrells of Trenton and 59 year old Jasper Jordan of Omaha were southbound on I-29.
The highway patrol said Sorrells attempted to pass Jordan by traveling into the right lane. But investigators said Sorrells apparently lost control with the front left of his car colliding with the front right of Jordan's car.
Both cars, according to the state patrol, traveled off the east side of I-29, and struck the cable barrier with one turning over onto its side. A passenger in the Jordan vehicle, 77 year old Louise Edington of Omaha, was pronounced dead at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Jordan--the driver—along with passengers 76 year old Mollie McGee and 19 year old
Kassandra Jordan, also from Omaha, were taken to Heartland Hospital. Also taken to the same hospital was 41 year old Kellie Holtman of St. Joseph who was riding in the car driven by Sorrells.
The patrol report indicated none of the Omaha residents, including the fatality, was wearing a safety device. Their vehicle was demolished while Sorrells' car received what the patrol called minor damage in the 8:45 Wednesday
morning accident in rural Buchanan County.
