A Trenton boy is hospitalized after what Sheriff Rodney Herring describes as an accidental shooting. The incident happened Monday afternoon while four teenage boys from Grundy County were hunting along Muddy Creek, south of the waste water treatment plant in Trenton.
Sheriff Herring said 14 year old Brandon Maberry sustained a significant ankle injury, described as "non-life threatening". He was injured when shot by another boy using a 12 gauge shotgun. Sheriff Herring declined to identify the other boy—noting his juvenile status at age 15.

The Grundy County Sheriff said after the incident, Maberry was taken to the waste water plant where his mother was called. She came to the scene and took her son to Wright Memorial Hospital. The youth was then transported by ground ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital of Kansas City where he reportedly is to have surgery.

Sheriff Herring, who is preparing the incident investigation, said he does not anticipate seeking charges but will routinely submit a report to the juvenile office.
