KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - A 24-year-old Kansas City woman has been charged in connection to a head-on crash that resulted in the death of an unborn child as well as injuries to the mother - and it turns out she shouldn't have been driving in the first place.

Chelsea C. Summer faces involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and driving while revoked charges.

Kansas City police responded to a head-on collision on the Heart of America Bridge on June 7. According to court records, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol from Summer's vehicle.

Both Summer and a pregnant 21-year-old victim were taken to area hospitals for their injuries.

Multiple witnesses told police that a truck driven by Summer was headed north in the southbound lane of the bridge when it was involved in a head-on collision with the victim's vehicle.

Preliminary information from the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office indicated that the victim's injuries sustained in the head-on crash with Summer caused the death of her unborn child.

"Our thoughts are for the victim, for her recovery and for her loss," Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Summer should not have been driving as her license was suspended on May 21. Before that, she has had six prior suspensions of her license, all for failing to appear on a ticket.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $150,000.
