|(KTVO/heartlandconnection.com) - Just before five Tuesday morning, the Kirksville Fire Department received a call involving a fire at Shockey’s Trailer Court. |
When firefighters arrived on the scene they were able to enter the home immediately. When they did, they found the bodies of a mother and daughter.
“Our first crews arrived on the scene, made entry and found the first victim,” said Kirksville Fire Chief Tom Collins. “The neighbors reported that there could be a second victim so they continued their search. With the aid of a thermal imaging camera they found the second victim and both of them were removed already deceased on the scene.”
Officials say the fire started in the living room. They also say the trailer had multiple working smoke detectors.
Chief Collins says nearby homes were not threatened by the fire. "There was no exposure to anything else,” he said. "There's not even a lot of damage to the building itself. Neighbors didn't have anything to worry about at all."
The State Fire Marshal's office was on the scene just hours after the fire was reported. The investigation is ongoing.
“Even after they're done it'll take a little bit to do the rest of their investigation before it’s released,” said Collins.
Adair County Coroner Brian Noe told KTVO the victims are Bernice Johnson, 78, of Kirksville and her daughter, Lynice Newton, 54. Noe said it was Johnson's residence where the fire happened.
He said he is not sure yet if Newton was a permanent resident at the home or just staying with Johnson temporarily.
