|ST. LOUIS (AP) - A Weldon Spring bait shop owner and 27 others face federal drug trafficking charges related to the sale and production of bath salts and other synthetic drugs.|
The suspects include eight defendants from Illinois, four from Indiana and one from Arizona. U.S. Attorney Richard Callahan disclosed the series of indictments at a Wednesday news conference in St. Louis.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that federal authorities are seeking more than $23 million in assets linked to illegal sales, including cash, bars of gold and silver and homes and commercial properties.
The indictments say some defendants illegally imported chemicals, often using misleading labels or other documents to conceal the contents and avoid detection. The products were given misleading names such as scouring powder, incense and potpourri.
