County Commission Accepts New Contract To House Ambulance Service

Facing a June 30th expiration of the current lease, the Grundy county commission yesterday accepted a new contract to renew renting space for the ambulance service to be housed at the city of Trenton's public safety complex at 17th and Harris in Trenton.

The terms are those proposed by the Trenton City Council, 11 hundred dollars a month in rent plus one fourth of the utility costs for the ambulance service to occupy 25 percent of the space. The Trenton fire department and Grundy county rural utilities the rest of the space. The new lease agreement goes into effect July 1st and covers five years. However, the county requested, and the city accepted, a clause allowing 180 days notice if the ambulance service wishes to vacate the premises.

Commissioners pointed out time was running out on the existing lease.

While agreeing to the new contract, commissioners say they still are reviewing other possible options on housing the ambulances in the future.

Currently, three of the county ambulances are each housed in a “half bay” at the city complex. There's also a fourth ambulance that is a spare. Members of the ambulance crew work a 48 hour shift so there are overnight accommodations, a kitchenette, a bathroom, an office, and storage. County officials signed the contract this morning. It's yet to be signed by city officials. It's also possible the contract could be presented to the city council at its next meeting before authorizing the signatures.
