Grundy County will participate in the Capstone Exercise on Thursday, which involves the set-up of a Red Cross emergency shelter. Volunteers are still needed for the exercise, to help portray shelter workers and people in need of shelter.

Eight states are testing the ability to respond to a potential earthquake in southeast Missouri. It involves the dispersal of residents from that area to other locations across the state, including Grundy County (Trenton).

The local emergency operations center will operate from the Trenton Fire Station. Emergency Management Coordinator Glen Briggs explained that once notice is received from the state at 8 AM on Thursday, Trenton will be receiving a certain number of people who need shelter, and the operation center will open. Staff will begin setting up the Red Cross emergency shelter from 8:30 to 9 o'clock on Thursday morning at the First Christian Church. Grundy County, in addition to the rest of northwest Missouri, will then test their efforts to feed, clothe, and shelter people leaving the earthquake-damaged areas of southeast Missouri.

The exercise allows people who attended past Red Cross shelter training to test the skills they have acquired. Volunteers will follow a script that allows them to experience common things that would happen during a sheltering event.

Representatives from schools, fire departments, law enforcement, emergency medical service, and Wright Memorial Hospital are encouraged to take part. Questions should be directed to Glen Briggs (635-0706) or Katie Briggs (Grundy County Mass Care Coordinator at 635-0261). To volunteer, you can contact Kelli Hillerman with the Grundy County Health Department at 359-4196.
