Flowers, 28, dealt with a knee injury but was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time this past season after posting 68 tackles, one sack, and one interception in 13 games.

He thanked the team's owners, his fans, and teammates in a Twitter message posted Friday afternoon.

Flowers was drafted by the Chiefs with the 35th pick in 2008, and played in at least 13 games in each of his six seasons with the team, collecting 374 tackles and 17 interceptions, including three he returned for touchdowns.

He was set to make $5.25 million next season, and the Chiefs decision to release Flowers is believed to be a money-saving move, expected to help the franchise sign linebacker Justin Houston and quarterback Alex Smith to contract extensions.
