Derrell Spellmeyer, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges in the deaths of Carol and Freddie Wilson at their home south of Versailles, was sentenced by Circuit Judge Stanley Moore.

Two other people charged in the crime, Mandy Mitchell, 28, and Garland Mitchell, 45, both of Jefferson City, are scheduled for a jury trial in September.

Morgan County Sheriff Jim Petty said shortly after the slayings that all three were suspected of stabbing and shooting Carol and Freddie Wilson just after 11 a.m. Feb. 4, 2013, at the victims’ home on Dorsey Lane, just off Route TT, which is south of Versailles.

According to court documents, police arrested the three suspects in a white van on Highway 5, not far from the crime scene. A detective reported the van had attempted to hit him head on while approaching the crime scene. The van then crashed into a ditch, and all three people inside were arrested.

Inside the van, a detective says he found a small .32 caliber hand gun and a bottle of hydrocodone belonging to Carol Wilson.

In a probable cause statement, Detective Charles Black with the Morgan County Sheriff's Office says Spellmeyer admitted to the shooting, and stated, "they made me do it."

Black says Spellmeyer also admitted to being in the home and inflicting the knife wounds on Freddie Wilson.

Black adds that the Mitchells told him they drove Spellmeyer to the Wilsons' residence to obtain drugs, and say they heard gunshots a short time later. They told authorities that Spellmeyer then returned to the white van with a gun in his hand, with blood on his clothing.

Sheriff Petty says Spellmeyer knew the Wilsons, but he wasn't sure how.
