The explosion happened just before 7 p.m. in the 9100 block of Tennessee Avenue. A neighbor reported hearing one huge explosion and several smaller ones. She also said there was thick smoke pouring from the home.

Other neighbors said the blast shook their own homes.

Four of the injured people were taken to hospitals and two of them are children, investigators said.

"I grabbed ahold of the daughter," said neighbor Wallace Davis. "She kept screaming, 'My father! My father! I've got to go back in.' I was like, 'Baby, you can't go in the house.'"

Investigators have not said what caused the blast. Firefighters said once they get the hot spots out, they would be able to get a better look at the origin site.

Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forte said a bomb and arson squad would go to the way to the scene, but he said that was standard procedure. He also said the house was unsafe to enter and officers would keep it under guard overnight.

Despite rattling neighbors homes, the damage was limited to the house that exploded.
