|DETROIT (WXYZ/CNN) - The lone caregiver at a Detroit adult foster care facility is being called a hero after saving the lives of her 20 charges during a fire.|
While firefighters worked fast to put out the flames and smoke, residents at AFCA Home were praising foster care worker Eugenia for her bravery.
"As far as I'm concerned, whatever she needs I got her, okay. She did a wonderful job, here training kicked in," said Ed Wilson, AFCA Home manager.
A fire broke out on the building's top floor and left about 20 residents homeless.
"We're making sure that they have food and shelter and that they have all of their needs met," said Nicole Pribbernow, Red Cross.
"It's fabulous. My heart is full. People reach out, that's what we do. No matter what the differences are we come together in times like this," Wilson said.
Though they may have been unharmed physically, some are shaken up about what took place.
"The majority of the damage was on the top floor and so those who lived up there and had to escape, they are pretty upset. It was a lot to go through, a lot to process," Pribbernow said. "And today they are starting to realize what it's going to take to recover."
As for Eugenia, she was too emotion to talk but the residents and management are grateful to her.
