Longtime Meadville High School boy's basketball coach Darren Smith has been named the new head coach of the girl's basketball program at Chillicothe High School.

According to a report from the Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune, Smith will replace coach Rachael Parkey, in addition to teaching elementary school physical education and middle school health. Smith becomes the second Class 1 basketball coach to take a job at Chillicothe over the last few years, after former Newtown-Harris boy's coach Tim Cool took the reigns of the Hornet boys program a couple of years ago.

Meadville has been very successful under Smith's tutelage, with a number of district titles, and advanced to the "Show-Me Showdown" in Columbia the last two seasons, finishing fourth in the state in 2013, and finishing runner-up to state champion Scott County Central last month.

The removal of Parkey from the head coaching position is surprising, considering that the Lady Hornets program appears to be on an upswing, with a strong contigent of freshmen helping lead Chillicothe to its first winning season in four years under Parkey's leadership. Parkey finishes her four years at Chillicothe with a record of 46-54. Smith leads to Chillicothe after 211 career wins on the bench of the Eagles.
