That means officials are advising against any open burning until further notice for the unincorporated areas of Grundy county. The request is attributed to dry ground conditions often accompanied by warm temperatures and strong winds.

The Grundy county commission met this morning at the Courthouse to consider issuing a burn ban. But commissioners took no action pending clarification of a state statute regarding burn bans. The statute, as revised and effective last August 28th, lists conditions to be met for first, second, and fourth class counties. Grundy is a third class county.

One condition of a burn ban, as stated by the state, is the determination by the U-S Drought Monitor that a county is designated with severe, extreme, or exceptional drought. The latest U-S map, updated March 18th, shows northern Missouri to be in the category called “abnormally dry.”

Grundy county commissioners say they have asked the county attorney to look into possibly having a local ordinance concerning bans on open burning.
