Sullivan County EMA Staff Become Certified Instructors

|The Sullivan County Emergency Management Agency staff just returned from two weeks of intensive training sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security.|
The training was administered by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Successful completion certified the staff to conduct courses locally for first responders such as police, fire and EMS.
The first week of training was Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings and focused on the identification of homemade explosives and incident response to bombings. The second week of training was the Prevention of and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents and focused on the ability to develop policies, procedures and training, and the operational capabilities to deter, prevent, interdict, respond to and mitigate the effects of a suicide bombing incident.
The training the Sullivan County staff can provide is designed for all levels of first responders who may respond to or become involved in incidents than involve explosives or improvised explosive devices. At the completion of training, participants will be able to recognize readily available homemade explosive components and commercial/military explosives. They will also develop the ability to safely and effectively respond to an array of pre-detonation, post-detonation and continuing explosive incidents.

The training attended by the Sullivan County staff was totally funded by the Department of Homeland Security. No county or state funds were expended.
