|The North Central Missouri College women's basketball team has won the Region 16 postseason championship, taking the title with a 77-64 win over St. Louis on Tuesday night, in a game broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com.|
Playing at STate Fair Community College in Sedalia, the Lady Pirates struggled early, falling behind by a margin of 13-5, but strong defense helped to bolster a North Central surge that brought the #1 seed in the tournament to a 29-29 halftime tie. The game-deciding spurt in the second half came midway through the final 20 minutes, with NCMC pushing a lead out to double digits, and holding off a couple of minor runs from the Archers late.
The win, the NINTH in a row for NCMC, gives the Lady Pirates a 16-12 record, and a home date with Mid-South Community College (West Memphis, Arkansas) on Saturday at the Ketcham Community Center. Early indications from Head Coach Jenni Croy were that a 2 o'clock tip would be requested, but that official time has not yet been announced by the college in Trenton. The game between the Greyhounds and the Lady Pirates will be for the "District P Championship". The winner will advance to the NJCAA Division Two national championship later this month at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.
In the championship game victory, Lady Pirate sophomore Lexi Hope (a Sedalia native) scored a game-high 23 points Sydnee Rounkles continued her strong second semester play with 12 points. Nancy Berwanger and Samone Redditt both scored 10. The loss for St. Louis ends the Archers season at 17-8. Kalah Martin and Deborah Holcomb both scored 15 points, with Zuri Hill adding 11 for STLCC.
Saturday's Mid-South at NCMC women's basketball game will be broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com. It will be the first district appearance for the Lady Pirates since NCMC won at MSU-Bottineau (North Dakota) in March 2007.
