Gilman City Girls Roll Into District 11 Semifinals

Playing in a rare Saturday MORNING district quarterfinal, the second-seeded Gilman City Ladyhawks cruised to a 66-33 victory over the Grundy R-5 Lady Panthers in Class 1, District 11 basketball action in Galt.

The Ladyhawks struck quickly, jumping out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter, and taking any thoughts of an upset away from the Lady Panthers. Mikayla Toombs paced the Gilman City attack with 16 points, with Hailey Burrows and Joslyn Newton each adding 11. Grundy R-5, in its final game of the 2013-2014 season, picked up 13 points from Liz Novak. Gilman City, on Tuesday night at 7 o'clock, will play the Cinderella squad from Novinger High School in the district semifinals. Novinger, the tournament's #6 seed, upset long-time rival Green City in a 39-38.

In the two other girl's quarterfinals played on Saturday in Galt, Meadville cruised to a 64-17 win over Tri-County, while Linn County beat Newtown-Harris 44-28. The Lady Eagles and Lady Mustangs meet at 5:30 on Tuesday night in a Class 1, District 11 girls semifinal. The District 11 girl's championship game will be played on Thursday night at 6 o'clock.

In Saturday's boys quarterfinals, the top-seeded Novinger Wildcats ended Gilman City's season, 95-15. The Wildcats, on Wednesday night at 5:30, will battle the fourth-seeded Grundy R-5 Panthers, in a boys semifinal to be broadcast LIVE on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com from Galt. Grundy R-5 advanced with a hard-earned 63-48 win over the Green City Gophers. Destin Gann led the Panthers with 18 points, with Cade Mullenix scoring 15, and Elliott O'Neal 11.

On the bottom half of the boy's bracket, Meadville moved past Linn County by a final score of 56-42. The second-seeded Eagles will duel with upset-minded Newtown-Harris on Wednesday night at 7 o'clock. The Tigers, behind a sensational 39 point effort from Adam Crawford, blitzed Tri-County 66-34. In the final game of the season for the Mustangs, Dillon Cook had 16 points. The boy's championship game from Grundy R-5 will be played on Friday night at 6 o'clock.
