|(KMOV) –A 33-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Ferguson, and the teen told police she contracted HIV from the man.|
Authorities say the accused man was later identified as a sex offender. While he has not been charged for the assault allegations against him, he was charged with failing to register as a sex offender for not reporting his home address.
“We received information from the victim, and the victim’s family, that’s when we initiated our investigation,” said Officer Tim Zoll with the Ferguson Police Department.
Zoll said the investigation into the victim’s allegations, which began late last year, led police to the suspect. They say he broke the law by not alerting authorities he had moved in 2013.
Court documents show in 2003 he pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct with a 12-year-old victim.
The teen in the latest case told police she was sexually assaulted by the man and was later diagnosed with HIV.
Zoll said the potential HIV revelations will lead to further investigation.
“The detective that initially handled the assignment, I’m sure there will be to see what more he can find out,” he said.
It is still unclear if the suspect has HIV, but warrants have been issued for the sex offender registration charge. Authorities are interested in questioning him for the latest sexual assault allegations.
