|At Chillicothe, this is the day an old hospital of 75 years plus closes, and a brand new one opens. Patients were to be moved, starting about 6 o'clock this morning, from the Hedrick Medical Center at Broadway and Central to the new, up-to-date hospital at the junction of U-S 65 and Mohawk Road.|
Assisting this morning with the transfer of patients is the Chillicothe Department of Emergency Services, including firefighters and ambulance personnel.
Fire Chief Darrell Wright said while the transfer process is underway, Chillicothe and the surrounding area will receive emergency call coverage by members of the Carrollton Fire Department as well as ambulances from Caldwell county and Cameron.
The city of Chillicothe owns the hospital facilities at both locations.
City Administrator Ike Holland says once the old Hedrick closes this morning, hospital officials will have 90 days to completely clear out of the facility.
Holland said the city of Chillicothe will be advertising for bids to tear down the old
structure. Also included will be an opportunity for bidders to salvage materials in an
effort to lower the overall cost of the demolition.
The oldest part of Hedrick Medical Center was built in 1936. It now houses medical offices. Additions to the hospital were built in 1954 and 1972.
