|(stltoday.com) A man already on probation for assaulting his son has pleaded no contest to new charges against the boy and was sentenced to seven years in prison.|
Mark Alan Calloni, 46, of the 100 block of South Main Street was charged in July with child abuse.
He entered the plea — in which he does not admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to get a conviction in a trial — last month before Circuit Judge Jon A. Cunningham.
According to police, Calloni attacked his 11-year-old for unknown reasons, striking him multiple times in the head with a wooden bat. Calloni then tackled the boy and pinned him to the ground when the boy tried to flee, police said.
The boy eventually was able to get away and ran to a neighbor's house, where he contacted authorities. He did not suffer any serious injuries.
In the earlier incident, which happened in 2005, Calloni pleaded guilty to domestic assault, endangering the welfare of a child and felonious restraint. Then Circuit Judge Keith Sutherland gave Calloni a suspended sentence and placed him on five years probation.
