|(News-Leader.com) A 4-year-old girl is dead, officials say, after being accidentally shot in the head by a man doing target shooting.|
Zoie Dougan of Branson died en route to a Springfield hospital, according to Christian County Coroner Brad Cole. Cole confirmed that medical examiners performed an autopsy on Dougan Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened south of Rogersville Monday afternoon, which is located in the south central portion of Missouri.
Christian County deputies were called to a home at 5813 South Highway U at 3:07 p.m. to reports of a toddler being shot in the head.
According to Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle, the girl had been brought to the home as a visitor. The 24-year-old man who lived in the house was outside target shooting with a .22-caliber rifle.
“The position he was shooting from — his vision was blocked to his right — and a visiting 4-year-old girl walked into the path of fire and he shot her in the head,” Kyle said.
The girl was taken to a Springfield hospital but died as a result of a single gunshot wound.
The man who shot the girl was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Webster County, but was taken to the Christian County jail in Ozark. Kyle says he will be held there as deputies investigate the shooting.
“We investigate them as a crime until we can determine otherwise,” Kyle said. “We’ll present our findings to the prosecutor and she’ll make a decision as to whether or not there will be charges filed.”
