A Missouri Department of Agriculture proposed rule involving trichomoniasis was among the topics of an Agricultural Interim Committee hearing chaired by State Representative Casey Guernsey of Bethany.

Guernsey said, it's hoped the disease can be wiped out while ensuring unnecessary financial burdens are not placed on family farmers.

Guernsey noted Missouri Cattlemen's Association President, Chuck Massengill, expressed concerns about the Missouri Department of Agriculture's proposed plan for bull's testing positive, but not actually infected with the disease. Massengill said a false positive is possible---although it's rare.

Massengill said cattlemen could suffer a huge financial burden, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars, from the unnecessary slaughter of their animals. He said producers need an effective appeal process for reclassification of any positive bull, providing subsequent tests and an in-depth investigation.
