Winston Redbirds Win 2013 Boy's State Softball Title

|The Winston Redbirds, for the third time this season, beat HDC Conference rival Grundy R-5, this time by a score of 15-1 in Saturday night's boy's state fast-pitch championship game at Danner Park in Chillicothe.|
Winston won the state tournament for the first time in school history, ripping its way through the weekend tournament, beating Tina-Avalon 15-0 in Friday night's quarterfinal, and North Harrison 12-2 in the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon.
Grundy R-5, in its second place run, rolled past East Harrison on Friday night 17-2, then won over Jefferson in the state semifinal on Saturday by a score of 9-7. Jefferson beat North Harrison for third place.
In the consolation semifinals, North Mercer beat Tina-Avalon 18-10, and Newtown-Harris downed East Harrison 14-4. Newtown-Harris beat Mercer 12-6 in the consolation final. In one of the most exciting games in tournament history, North Harrison outlasted North Mercer in a Friday night quarterfinal thriller, 19-18. Jefferson downed Newtown-Harris in the state quarterfinals, 10-3.
The win makes Winston the FIRST HDC Conference team to win the state championship since Pattonsburg pulled the trick in 2007. Other HDC State Champions are the 1992 North Harrison Shamrocks, the 1993 Gilman City Hawks, the 1994 Ridgeway Owls, the 1995 and 1996 Pattonsburg Panthers, the 1997 North Daviess Knights, the 2000 Tri-County Mustangs, and the 2001 Grundy R-5 Panthers.
