3200 Children Participate In "Backpack Buddies" Program

Second Harvest Community Food Bank headquartered at St. Joseph says over 3200 children in 18 counties are participating in its Backpack Buddies program this school year.

The supplemental weekend food program includes breakfast, lunch, and a healthy snack each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Children receive food based on 4 rotating menus offered throughout the year.

Second Harvest Community Food Bank provided information about Grundy County---saying 480 children in Grundy County are food insecure, meaning they don't know where their next meal will come from.

Second Harvest said it's partnered with the Grundy County Community Food Pantry, Church Women United, Pamida Foundation, Land of Lakes Foundation, US Bancorp Foundation, and Hoffman and Reed to provide healthy meals to 120 children during the school year.

The organization says the number of children in other area counties considered food insecure are: Livingston County 860, Linn 700, Caldwell 560, Daviess County 490, Harrison 460, Sullivan 390, Putnam 260, and Mercer 220.
