Sports : Cainsville spoils home opener for Grundy R-5

The Cainsville Lady Red beat the Lady Panthers of Grundy County High School on Monday night by a score of 7-2. The Grundy R-5 boys were locked in a competitive game with the Jefferson Eagles when electrical difficulties at the Galt Ball Field led to the suspension of the game in the third inning, with the visitors from Conception Junction leading 3-2.

The Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has released the newest high school football rankings heading into the second week of the regular season. A convincing victory by Hamilton over South Harrison has strengthened the Hornets hold on the top spot in Class 1, while dropping the Bulldogs deeper towards the bottom of the Top 10 this week. Sports : Missouri's dove hunters urged to be safety-conscious during 2012 season

Dove hunters will need to be extra conscientious about safety this year, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The reasons include weather and the timing of opening day. MDC Hunter Education Coordinator Tony Legg is urging hunters to review hunting safety measures that are especially important when hunting on specially managed dove fields.

Chris Green, an NCMC graduate, was offered a minor league baseball contract by the Baltimore Orioles earlier this week.  After his graduation from NCMC in 2009, Green transferred to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville where he pitched two seasons for the Bearcats.

The Princeton Lady Tigers evened their softball record at 2-2 on Monday night with a 10-4 victory over the Chillicothe JV at Danner Park in Chillicothe. Sophomore Chelsie Jones picked up the win for Princeton with a complete game seven-hitter, giving up four runs, only two of them earned.

The Trenton High School girl's golf team will begin practice on Monday morning, August 6th from 8 to 10 o'clock at Riverside Country Club in Trenton. The Lady Bulldogs are the defending district champions, a goal reached two of the past three seasons. Coach Jeremy Austin says with a good group of girls returning, Trenton expects more success in 2012.

The long-awaited college choice for North Mercer girl's basketball standout Sierra Michaelis could be coming, perhaps sooner than later. The St. Joseph News-Press had a conversation with Michaelis within the past few days in which the Lady Cardinal senior-to-be indicated that she would like to give a verbal commitment to a school "by the end of July".
