Carter Ward, son of Jack and Mary Ann Ward, is the exhibitor of the 2013 Grand Champion Meat Goat at the Missouri State Fair. Carter is a member of the Plattsburg Hustlers 4-H Club in Plattsburg. His prize-winning Boer goat weighed 70 pounds.
The Reserve Grand Champion Meat Goat honor went to Gage Porter, son of Gary and Lori Porter. His Boer goat weighed 77 pounds. Gage is a member of the North Mercer FFA Chapter in North Mercer.
On Aug. 17, both Carter Ward and Gage Porter will sell their Boer goats in two of 12 lots offered in the Youth in Agriculture (YIA) Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the winning exhibitors and the Missouri State Fair YIA Scholarship Program.
Through the generous support of YIA sponsors, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships to Missouri youth pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. Last year, thirty-six $1,000 scholarships and one supreme $2,500 scholarship were awarded to youth across Missouri. Since 1992, 436 Missouri youth have received more than $361,000 in scholarships.
‚ÄúThe success of the Sale is credited to the support from Missouri Youth in Agriculture sponsors,‚ÄĚ said Wayne Yokley, Chairman of the YIA Committee, and Superintendent of the Sale of Champions. ‚ÄúTheir donations help ensure we are able to continue supporting our young people as they grow in agriculture and pursue higher education.‚ÄĚ
