In an effort to fill a summer time void, free lunches will be offered to all persons beginning Monday in Trenton for what’s considered a pilot project of Second Harvest community food bank of northwest Missouri.

The project is receiving support from various churches and school youth organizations.

According to Brenda Thorne, who’s coordinating local plans, lunch will be served for free at the First Assembly of God church activities building, between 11:30 and 1 o’clock. It’ll be available Monday through Friday for a seven week period from June 24th through August 16th.
This coincides with the final week of Trenton R-9 summer school; leading to the beginning of the regular school term in August.

During summer school, lunch is served at Rissler and the Backpack Buddies program provides food for consumption by the youth on the weekend.
Mrs. Thorne said the menus will change daily but three days a week will feature hot meals while two days offer a cold lunch. The kitchen of the activities building will be used by volunteers to prepare the food. Representatives of churches and the school groups then each take one week to serve the food. Food will be delivered weekly by Second Harvest of St. Joseph; but could be more often if the numbers having lunch dictate a need for more food.

Mrs. Thorne said a grant was received to cover costs of the program thus allowing for lunch to be free of charge. ($2 charge was possible for adults) Meals are provided for children and adults without regard to age, family income or religious affiliation.
