The Teen Video Challenge is a national competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program.

Winning videos were selected at the state level to be recognized as an official CSLP Teen Video Challenge winner for 2013. The winning entry from Missouri, “Labeled”, was created by seven students from the Daviess County Library: Mathew Flanagan, Theresa Lyn France, Alexander Furr, Mark Messick, Jared Richardson, Elisa Warner and Andrew Warner. Twenty-six states and more than 100 teens participated in the creation of these winning videos. Teens in Missouri submitted five videos to the state level contest.

“I congratulate these students on their achievement,” Kander said. “It is always inspiring to see students taking such an active interest in their local library. Their efforts to promote libraries through this competition help not only Missouri libraries, but libraries across the country.”

The video competition is in its third year of encouraging teens to get involved in promoting summer reading programs and public libraries. Each year, the contest has a slogan for the teams to use as inspiration for their video, the 2013 theme was , “Beneath the Surface.” Each participating state selected one winning video to be named the official CSLP Teen Video Challenge state winner for 2013.

Whether produced by an individual teen, groups of teens, a teen library club, or a teen school group, all exhibit creativity and illustrate quality work on the part of the industrious teen film makers. Many videos use humor or literary references to communicate the “Beneath the Surface” idea. In addition to promoting reading and the “Beneath the Surface” slogan, it is clear from all these videos that teens value their public libraries.

Winning videos can be viewed by visiting CSLP’s website at The winning videos can be used by all teens and all public libraries to promote summer reading nationwide.
