News : First Baptist Church Celebrates 175 Years

The First Baptist Church of Trenton is celebrating 175 years of community service. Pastor Denny Chesnut, along with church members were guests on KTTN's Open Line.

To put 175 years into perspective, church pastor Denny Chesnut discussed the church's long history when he was among guests today on KTTN's Open Line.

According to information recorded in a history book, the church was founded by about ten persons who gathered under an elm tree. The first real building was described as a log cabin built upon stones.

A gothic, or ornate-looking, structure was built at 12th and Main; then replaced in 1906 by a large brick building that stood there for many many years.

Although he wasn't in Trenton at the time in the 1990's, Reverend Chesnut reflects on FORMER pastor, Doctor Clyde Elder, when discussing the “walk” members made from the old building on Main street to the new structure, now on Oklahoma Avenue.

Pastor Denny Chesnut of First Baptist Church in Trenton. Several events are scheduled Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday as the church observes its 175th anniversary.

Sarah Danner of rural Trenton was also among guests this week on Open Line. She discusses musical presentations and historical skits by church members, as well as remarks from former pastors and past staff, among other activities.

There's a banquet at 12 noon Sunday. Then Sunday afternoon, two church members with the longest tenure, Daryl Browning and Bob Skinner, will be recognized; then given the opportunity to cut the anniversary cake.

The church also has commemorative items for sale including cookbooks (550 recipes); plates, cups, and (polo) shirts noting the existence of the First Baptist Church denomination 1838 to 2013.

In the early days, it was known as Washington United Baptist.
