KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Mercer girls win third place in Class 1, Michaelis falls 14 points short of record
Posted by Tom on 2013/3/12 8:30:00 (215 reads) News by the same author

The Mercer Lady Cardinals rebounded well from Thursday night's disappointing loss to Chamois, running away from Chadwick and winning the Class 1 girl's third place game, 75-54 on Friday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, in a game broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com.

The game was close for two quarters, but Mercer dominated the second half. Unlike the Chamois game, seniors Sierra Michaelis and Courtney Owens stayed out of foul trouble for Mercer, and the duo controlled the game, with Michaelis scsoring 36 points and Owens 27. Michaelis' 36 point night, with Missouri head coach Robin Pingeton in attendance, left her 14 points shy of the all-time state scoring record set by Hannah Wilkerson of Miller High School. Mercer finishes the season at 29-2, with the highest ever finish in school history. Chadwick finishes the 25-7, after being led in the third place game by Hailey Stevens and Maddie Hursh with 13 points each, while Kailyn Rozell added 12.

The Meadville boys, also playing in the Class 1 third place game on Friday night, fell to the high-powered Drexel Bobcats by a score of 75-50. Drexel came into the Show-Me Showdown ranked #1 in the state, and was beaten by one point in Thursday's state semifinals. The Bobcats had Javyn Johnston with 24 points, C.J. Bolton with 23, and Trevor Cooley with 12. Derek Smith scored 19 points for the Meadville Eagles. Meadville finishes the season with a fourth-place trophy in Class 1 and a record of 29-3, while Drexel ends the campaign at 30-2.

The Marceline girls went winless in Columbia, falling in the Class 2 third place game, 64-53 against Skyline.

Saturday's STATE CHAMPIONSHIP game results from Mizzou Arena were:

Class 1 GIRLS: Walnut Grove 47, Chamois 46
Class 1 BOYS: Eminence 62, Stanberry 60
